Flat2VR Spark's second release puts the chaos directly into players' hands, with fresh content already available and some intriguing possibilities still lurking in the wilderness.

The Beast Arrives in VR

Flat2VR Spark has had a busy year. With FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR officially exiting Early Access and reaching version 1.0 on Steam this October, the initiative's second title has been making a rather different kind of impression.

Released on September 17, I Am Your Beast VR brings Strange Scaffold's acclaimed covert revenge thriller into virtual reality, placing players directly inside Alphonse Harding's one-man war against the military-industrial complex. The original game was already known for its lightning-fast combat, stylish comic book presentation, and addictive loop of short, replayable missions. In VR, that same formula becomes a hands-on display of badassery, where every ridiculous kill, perfectly timed throw, and narrow escape is yours to pull off.

There's something deeply satisfying about emptying a pistol, hurling it at an approaching enemy, grabbing another weapon with your free hand, and continuing the fight without missing a beat. Dual wielding introduces all sorts of brutal possibilities, while physical punches, knife attacks, and improvised weapons give players even more ways to punish the unfortunate COI soldiers standing in their path.

It's a feeling that has resonated with reviewers and players alike. The ability to physically perform these outrageous action sequences, rather than simply execute them with traditional controls, adds another layer of satisfaction to every successful run. And when everything comes together, with RJ Lake's pounding soundtrack driving the action forward, the experience can quickly become intoxicating.

But that level of mastery doesn't come free. What begins as a frantic scramble to survive gradually evolves into a carefully orchestrated assault as players learn enemy positions, perfect their routes, and discover increasingly creative ways to dispatch the opposition. Every failed attempt teaches you something. Every restart is another opportunity to shave seconds off the clock, chain together a few more kills, and make the COI regret sending anyone after you in the first place.

Importantly, the adaptation preserves the immediacy that made the original so compelling. Controls and interactions are deliberately streamlined, keeping players focused on movement, combat, and improvisation rather than complicated inputs. The challenge comes from mastering what you can do with those tools, not remembering which buttons to press.

The result is an action-hero power fantasy where looking like an unstoppable killing machine is the reward for actually becoming one.

The COI Has Some Stories to Tell

Of course, Alphonse Harding has never been particularly good at leaving well enough alone.

On October 15, I Am Your Beast VR received its first major content expansion with the arrival of Support Group, a free update bringing nine additional levels and ten new cutscenes from the original game's story epilogue.

The premise is as ridiculous as it is fitting. After somehow surviving their encounters with Harding, members of the Covert Operations Initiative gather to share their experiences. Unfortunately for them, those encounters sound less like routine military operations and more like horror stories about an unstoppable monster loose in the woods.

As the survivors recount their terrifying experiences, Harding's exploits become increasingly exaggerated, pushing the game's already outrageous action into even more absurd territory. Apparently, getting your entire squad dismantled by one retired agent has a way of affecting your recollection of events.

In VR, players get to become the nightmare these unfortunate soldiers are describing. Support Group brings its exaggerated encounters into the physical chaos of the adaptation, where gunplay, weapon juggling, and close-quarters brutality give players plenty of opportunities to demonstrate exactly why the COI might need a support group in the first place.

The expansion also arrived alongside a substantial collection of improvements to the broader experience. Global Steam leaderboards now give players another reason to perfect their runs and prove their worth against the competition, while refinements to melee combat make close-quarters encounters even more responsive. New bHaptics support adds another layer of physical feedback, and additional options for left-handed controls, visual effects, and spectator views allow players to tailor the experience to their preferences.

Even the game's demanding ranking system received some attention, with slightly more generous time thresholds better accommodating the physical demands of VR while preserving the challenge.

Together, these additions reinforce the game's greatest strength: the irresistible urge to run a level one more time, knowing full well that you can do better, faster, and with considerably more style.

The Hunt Isn't Over

With Support Group now available in VR, it's interesting to consider what other surprises might be hiding in the original game's post-launch content.

One particularly intriguing possibility is Cold Sweat, the free expansion Strange Scaffold released for the original I Am Your Beast in January 2025.

Where Support Group expands the story through the increasingly outrageous recollections of COI survivors, Cold Sweat takes a decidedly more sadistic approach. Its seven ultra-challenging, story-free levels abandon the familiar boundaries of the wilderness in favor of psychedelic, nightmare-themed environments filled with surreal imagery and bizarre landscapes.

Designed as a final test for experienced players, Cold Sweat pushes the original game's speed, precision, and improvisation to their limits, demanding near-perfect execution while surrounding players with some of its strangest visual creations.

Now imagine experiencing those environments in VR.

Surrealism hits differently inside a headset. On a traditional display, even the most bizarre environments remain contained within the edges of a screen. In VR, those boundaries disappear. Impossible landscapes stretch around you in full three-dimensional space, strange structures loom at life size, and the unsettling sense that something is fundamentally wrong with the world becomes much harder to shake.

The thought of combining that spectacle with the physical freedom of I Am Your Beast VR is particularly enticing. Picture navigating impossible environments while juggling weapons, chaining together brutal takedowns, and racing against merciless time limits, all while trying to make sense of a world that seems determined to defy logic.

And for a game built around repetition and mastery, there's something especially appealing about the prospect of being thrown into environments that challenge everything you've learned. Suddenly, even the most seasoned killing machine might find themselves scrambling to survive again.

Whether Cold Sweat's particular brand of nightmare fuel ever makes the jump to VR remains to be seen, but it's one hell of a possibility to consider.

For now, I Am Your Beast VR and the free Support Group expansion are available on SteamVR, with plenty of reasons to return to the wilderness.

The COI wanted Alphonse Harding out of retirement. At this point, they're probably regretting it.
